TikTok has decided to pay a £12.7 million fine imposed by Britain’s data regulator after dropping an appeal against the ruling. The case concerned the platform’s handling of children under the age of 13.
The regulator previously found that TikTok had not done enough to prevent children below the minimum age from using the service.
TikTok said it disagreed with the original decision but chose to end the appeal. The company pointed to youth-safety measures introduced since the period covered by the investigation.
The case highlights the continuing challenge faced by social-media companies in preventing young children from accessing platforms designed for older users.
For parents, the developments underline the importance of understanding the age controls and safety features available on social-media services. TikTok remains one of the UK’s most widely used video platforms.
