British luxury carmaker Bentley has launched its first fully electric vehicle, the Torcal SUV, marking an important step in the company’s move towards electric motoring. The vehicle will be built at Bentley’s factory in Crewe.
The new model can travel up to 375 miles on a single charge and has a starting price of about £173,000. Bentley is positioning the vehicle as an entry point to its luxury range.
The company is investing £350 million in its UK business alongside the launch. The Crewe factory employs around 4,000 workers.
One unusual feature is a synthetic engine soundtrack designed to reproduce some of the emotional character associated with Bentley’s traditional combustion engines.
The vehicle represents a significant change for a manufacturer famous for powerful petrol engines. Bentley now hopes its electric model can attract new customers while maintaining the craftsmanship associated with the British marque.
