An additional cost of living payment of £300 will be added to eligible claimants this year
£300 one-off
The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) recently updated online guidance for millions of older people who qualify for a £300 one-off ‘Pensioner Cost of Living Payment’ on top of their annual Winter Fuel Payment this year. In order to help people over State Pension age manage energy bills this winter, more than 8 million eligible household who receive the Winter Fuel Payment across the UK will receive the cash boost from November 2022.
The DWP has now clarified the payment amounts of people who live with someone and either of you receive certain benefits. These include Pension Credit, income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA), income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) or Income Support.
Does not affect eligibility for other benefits
The Winter Fuel Payment, including the extra Pensioner Cost of Living Payment, is not taxable and does not affect eligibility for other benefits. However, the full amount you will get for winter 2022 to 2023 depends on your circumstances.
People will be eligible for this payment if they are over State Pension age (aged 66 or above) between 19-25 September 2022.
DWP has updated the new details to include the £300 payment and clarified who is eligible and how much they will get, depending on their circumstances. They have also added that a computer program is being used to identify eligibility for a cost-of-living payment.
Computer program
The DWP guidance states: “DWP is using a computer program to identify who should get a Cost-of-Living Payment. If you disagree with this, contact the office that pays your benefit and tell them why you disagree.”
