DANGOTE REFINERY: NIGERIA’S BIGGEST REFINERY EXPANDS ITS REACH

Nigeria’s Dangote Petroleum Refinery is becoming an increasingly important supplier of refined fuel, both to Nigeria and international markets. Recent data showed that the refinery supplied about 35.87 million litres of petrol per day to the Nigerian market in August, accounting for almost all recorded domestic petrol supply.

The figures show how quickly Nigeria’s fuel market is changing. Domestic petrol supply rose while imports declined, with imported petrol falling by 26% in August. Domestic production accounted for roughly 71% of total petrol receipts during the month.

Dangote is also expanding its international business. Reuters reported that the refinery has emerged as an important fuel supplier to Europe following disruptions to Middle Eastern fuel exports. The refinery reportedly exported around 80,000 barrels per day of jet fuel to Europe during the second quarter.

The company is also planning a major expansion. Dangote executives said the refinery is on track for a plan to double its capacity to approximately 1.4 million barrels per day, creating one of the world’s largest refining complexes.

For Nigeria, the development represents a major shift in the country’s traditional fuel market. A larger domestic refining industry could reduce reliance on imported petroleum products while allowing Nigeria to become a bigger exporter of refined fuels. Dangote’s growing European and African customer base suggests that the refinery’s influence is extending well beyond Nigeria.
